Before Renoir: Islamic Art and the Folkwang’s Other Founding Story

Long before Renoir and van Gogh entered the Folkwang in Hagen, Karl Ernst Osthaus was collecting ceramics, textiles and metalwork from North Africa and West Asia. An exhibition in Essen tells this early story – and asks how its structures and gaps can be made visible today.
